How do I become a Christian?

Before we answer how someone becomes a Christian it is important to understand why someone needs to be a Christian. The basic answer to why one needs salvation is that all men are born sinful. That is we are born with a desire to please ourselves and not God. This is how the Bible speaks of humans in our natural, sinful state.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 ESV)

“And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds” (Colossians 1:21 ESV)

When God created Adam and Eve they were sinless, but in Genesis chapter 3, they chose to disobey one command that God gave them to refrain from eating from one tree in the Garden of Eden. Later the Letter to the Romans tells us that because of what Adam did all of us are born sinners.

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12 ESV)

Because each of us has sinned we must suffer the consequences for our sins.

“For the wages of sin is death,…” (Romans 6:23 ESV)

Yet, God made a way for our sins to be forgiven because,

“…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 ESV)

God sent Jesus to earth to live a life of obedience so that He, and not some animal, could be our sacrifice. In Romans 5, we are told about what Christ did to bring us salvation.

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 ESV)

Even though we were all sinners God made a way for us to be brought into a right relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Christ died to pay the penalty that our sins deserved. In order to enter into this relationship we must repent, or turn away from our sins and place our faith in Christ.

“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9-10 ESV)

If this message has helped you to see that you are a sinner in need of salvation we would invite you to confess your sins to God and accept the offer of salvation that is available through Christ’s sacrifice. This is how one becomes a Christian. If you have done this we would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us on the form below.

Being a Christian also makes you a disciple and we would encourage you to attend a church and inform the pastor of what has occurred in your life and that you desire to join the church so that you can be baptized and be a part of a church that can help you mature in your faith. If you are in our area we would love to have you visit us or we would be glad to help you find a church home where you can grow as the Lord desires for you to do.
